Right now, Australia's universities suck. Why? They're overpriced, and divorced from real life skills. The number of times, I've been in an org, and taken in a uni grad (gen an engineer) and had to beat the crap out of them for three years, to get them to think usefully, in a way that added to ROI, is ugly.
We need to go to the classic system - if you're going to graduate from uni, its because you did a longer degree. Why you did a longer degree, is because you spent 6 months of the year with an actual company, in the field. Then sure, you can spend 6 months at uni, teling your profs how out of date they are (and hopefully, forcing the unis to upgrade their thinking and staff).
Enough of this divide between theory and practice. Theory is no good, without practice. Time to strip down, those ivory towers.

When I went to WASM all those years ago we did work experience at various mine sites during our study. It was a prerequisite. Anyone who made it through to the end was also working there during the semester breaks. The dreamers and no hopers were weeded out or fell out themselves.
Not anymore....
