BOULDER Steel is set to be one of this regions biggest employers and will consolidate Gladstones position as a major player on the world stage in terms of a world-scale industry cluster.
Gladstone Economic and Industry Development Board (GEIDB) chief executive Garry Scanlan said in full production, Boulder Steel was expected to be one of the largest local employers in the Gladstone region.
Mr Scanlan said Boulder planned to construct and operate an integrated steel plant at a site in the Aldoga Precinct of the Gladstone State Development Area near Mt Larcom.
He said Boulder Steel was a significant project in its own right.
It will be a huge employment boom for the area both in construction and operations, Mr Scanlan said.
Its a multi-faceted project in terms of material supply and supply chain requirements. They have to get considerable consumables into the plant through the Gladstone port and from the local area, and they have got considerable outputs that they then need to export and distribute nationally.
The eventual production capacity of the plant is expected to be 5 million tonnes per annum of semi-finished steel products. Mr Scanlan said the project required a significant amount of people with ongoing employment.
The whole operation is fairly labour intensive with approximately 1200 people operating the facility afterwards. It will be a high level local employer and a high level employer for quite some time.
I see a lot of project proponents come through, but I am always impressed with how active Boulder is. Boulder has pursued this project and I have great admiration for their persistence, Mr Scanlan said.
Boulder Steel is an Australian publicly listed company which will joint venture with a Middle Eastern partner to promote the US$900million (first stage) project.
