Matmor process is an ironmaking process whichis presently being developed by EnvironmentalClean Technologies Ltd (ECT). It is a patentedtechnology, which is based on lignite coal andwhich is capable of replacing high-grade lump iron ore withlower-cost alternative raw materials because of its uniquechemistry and furnace design. Normally lignite coal is not usedfor metallurgical applications because of its high volatile matterand moisture contents.ECT is the owner of Matmor process technology, includingplant, equipment and intellectual property. Matmor process hasplaced itself to revolutionize primary ironmaking process with adesign consisting of a simple, low cost, low emission, andpatented Matmor retort using cheaper, alternative raw materials.This technology comprises two exclusive features namely (i) ituses lignite coal as a reductant and heat source which is notclaimed as of now by any other technology, and (ii) it includesin its plant design, a vertical shaft furnace which works withthe natural chemistry of the lignite coal.Development of Matmor process is based upon the removalof moisture by Coldry technology another patented technologyof the ECT and harnessing of the natural chemistry of thelignite coal through a process and a vertical retort furnacewhose design and process chemistry is different to those of ablast furnace (BF). The process chemistry of Matmor processutilizes hydrogenas a reducing gas, enabling lower operatingtemperatures and shorter process times than encountered in theBF.
