Embryo's stem cells harvested
June 24, 2004
A SYDNEY fertility clinic has extracted human stem cells from an embryo in a nationwide first, it has been reported.
According to the reports, scientists at Sydney IVF used a surplus embryo supplied by a Sydney couple who had undergone IVF treatment.
The organisation's director Robert Jansen said the development of the stem cell line was world class and reflected the use of a very high quality embryo.
Professor Jansen said the research could eventually help revolutionise treatments for spinal cord injuries and diseases such as Parkinson's.
It could also lead to improved IVF rates, he said.
"The potential of stem cell research is boundless," Prof Jansen said.
"This is a terrific moment for us."
The research had so far cost Sydney IVF $500,000, money which would eventually be recouped by charging commercial fees to other researchers wanting to use its cell lines.
The couple involved had completed their family but donated three frozen embryos to be used for stem cell extraction, two of which did not give successful results, the Sydney Morning Herald said.
