Travelling to conferences and 'presenting papers' is considered part of their research, by researchers. It comes under the rubric "keeping up to date with the latest discoveries". Research is an industry and closed shop. The academic elite will counter any criticism with the words "you are not suffiently educated in the field to make a sensible comment". End of story.
