I've planted things like sweet alyssum, bronze fennel and lavender. These attract predator insects of aphids and caterpillars. I think it helps.
Although I have to keep giving the rest of the garden the odd dose of derris and pyrethrum to keep them properly at bay, as my plot is quite intensive.
