Steven Goh on User Numbers

Steven Goh's comments to me by email are worthy of a thread of their own so some of this is a repost of my last comment with some additional info provided by Steven on numbers reported by Similarweb for Line.me (just listed on the NYSE with a market cap of $US9.6 billion) and Path.

Steven says this....

"our numbers are a composite of what's on android, web, and services like hipwee, alivenotdead, and our old feature phone clients. many cases of android were either by preinstall and bespoke app stores (not the main google play store), etc. we started rolling all the different properties together recently (last quarter it's alivenotdead, shopdeca, etc). and we'll continue to do so over the next quarter or so and we'll give a bit more visbility then.

for places like indonesia, the numbers are around 15m or so per month . and we're appearing like this ..

there's a lot more evidence out there if people look for it . my feeling is that in the next 6 months or so we'll start to appear more as a headline brand.

I looked at two other companies;  Line messenger (line.me) and path.  Line has about 220m users mostly in Japan, then Thailand.   And path is about 8m.

On Similarweb Line shows as 100m; Path as 2m.  The countries aren't right from what I know of both.

When I look at both as well on the Google play store.  That number also doesn't look right for either.   I think it's a reflection of what they've marketed in the store and not the number.

I know we don't spend any money at all on app store marketing.   It's all viral, some pre-installs, etc.."
