    The man whose "nonsense" you refer to occupies perhaps the most prestigious chair in physics, a position named after the most illustrious physicist of his time (and perhaps of all time), Sir Isaac Newton.

    I agree there is a certain ghoulish humour in ascribing a "backflip" to a wheelchair-bound, motor-neuron disease sufferer but I would be careful about dismissing Hawking as some populist loony. Hawking is a pre-eminent intellect in his field, even to critics who disagree with his theories. And the experiment to test the theory of time travel using two small "wormholes" created in a lab may be much closer than you think. "The Elegant Universe" and "Hyperspace" are just two of the good, recent physics texts accessible to the layman that treat this and other apparently far-fetched theories very seriously indeed.
