"Bluescope has a very very very very generous sick leave entitlement scheme thanks to the unions."

Which division did you work for? I worked for Perth Distibution Centre classified as a storeman level 4(highest), it was a massive $52k/yr on dayshift. Better on aft(20% loading) and nights(30% loading). Sick leave was 8 days per year and 10 days per year after you had been there 10 years. For a single day sick leave you needed no certificate, if I recall we were entitled to four like this. Double days required a certificate. And we were one of the best paid in the country. Redundancy was 3 weeks for each year capped at 52 weeks then about 3 years ago it was negotiated to 60 weeks capped. Average wage negotiations were about 4% averaged.
I'm not sure what the steel furnace workers get but they must be on some woozy of an award. Which award covers them?

As to management. Not for me to bag them but I do recall our tactic seemed to be to up the price when volume dropped lol Definitely had fail written all over it. Our customers were no longer loyal. They had multiple accounts and just played it amongst the suppliers, OST, Midalia(OST), Total Steel, and other players that were amalgamating to form more than a competitive opponent. Squat was spent on processing machinery until the last minute and even that was a very pathetic effort.
This is just an insight into ONE store. Multiple that by X and there's the demise of BSL.
