thorium is cheaper, much more abundant than uranium, does not need to be enriched/purified

the thorium fuel cycle is more efficient than uranium/plutonium fuel cycle; u need less throrium to produce the same amount of energy = less waste

THE BIG yes for thorium as fission fuel is the substantially shorter half live of the radioactive waste products

weapon-grade uranium cannot be extracted from thorium derived fission products

depending on the reactor design, throrium reactors could not undergo meltdown seen as in chernobyl or japan because of the chemistry/physics of the chain reaction. thorium needs constant priming with neutrons. uranium/plutonium needs initial priming and if critical mass present then BOOM!


we would have throrium reactors everywhere if the USA and Soviets weren't after the nasty stuff to build nuclear bombs in the 50's. the thorium research was pretty much doomed because there was no aspect of mass destruction to it. as stated above the chain reaction needs constant priming. not hte stuff you can build a nuclear warhead with.

INDIA is heavily invovled in R&D of thorium for their future reactors.
