Hotcopper is full of conspiracy theories of bots breaking into the houses and stealing children, governments targeting specific shareholders just for their own amusement and all round general paranoia. This is one of those rare occassions where there is most likely a few dodgy actions going on.

Why?

Because in these situations, technicals are used as a trigger and justification. I think you'll find there was probably some tweaking of that gap at 2742 going on to make the story better. So while I agree this one smells (a lot), the principals behind this will already have protected themselves.
