Isity completes air quality project for Lord Corporation; 3 month project reduces VOC emissions by more than 90%
With the final round of testing concluded, Isity has completed a time-critical remediation project for Lord Chemical’s plant in the Shanghai Chemical Industry Park (SCIP).
Along with other companies at SCIP, Lord had been coming under intense regulatory scrutiny for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that were leaking into the ambient air from production processes. Although Lord had an approved remediation plan in place that would eliminate VOC emissions over the next two years, regulators were pushing for a temporary solution that could be implemented immediately – with the threat of fines and even work stoppages looming. The problem was compounded by the fact that the substances used require an explosion-proof environment – no ordinary electronics were permitted, and installation could only take place when production was halted. Established engineering firms had been unable to provide a workable solution.
Isity worked with a long-term air quality partner PureLiving to provide the needed expertise and drew up a conceptual plan. Due to the urgency of the situation, we agreed with the client to move straight into a two-stage design and implementation process. The design used a custom set of interventions to capture and treat VOC emissions, including VOC monitoring, installing physical barriers, and reconfigured exhaust ducting. Several rounds of design in a short time ensured the maximum benefit at minimal cost and implementation time for Lord. Costs were controlled by modifying the existing exhaust system at locations where VOCs were being produced, and by designing several enclosures to a temporary standard so they can be removed once the permanent remediation plan is completed.
Testing after the solution was installed confirmed that VOC emissions were reduced by an average of 93% across the production line. The entire project, including testing, design and implementation, took less than three months.
Gareth McAllister, Lord’s President, Asia Pacific, said, “The Isity team was very responsive under a tight deadline to prepare and execute a plan that reduced our chemical plant VOC emissions by more than 90%. We were very pleased with the professional service provided by the Isity team. We know who to turn to the next time to improve the working environment of our employees.”
