There are two reasons I can think of for using a broker in a cr:
1) The broker(s) will assign an analyst to cover the stock. Vital to get AIS's name out there, especially with new money, be it small instos and retail.
2) Not using a broker may be interpreted as "desperate" by the market, thereby pressuring the sp down.
The above isn't always the case, but it is far more common than not using a broker.
$50M may be a too tough sell for the CEO's rolodex to surmount, and may ignite point 2 (above). This could spiral the sp down for a while.
