"To achieve reliable power 24/7, solar and wind need backup provided by gas." This is not true. Battery technology is the preferred solution to smooth solar and wind power generation, but another green option is to produce hydrogen gas for storage and transmission.
Gas (e.g. LNG) is not a necessary part of a future long-term renewables solution. But it is necessary for the short and medium-term (up to 20 years). WPL will do very well in the 2020's and 2030's.
