PAUL Keating has downplayed the benefits of budget stimulus packages, suggesting they have not provided the confidence boost needed to turn around the global financial crisis.

"I believe the opportunity for these packages is going to diminish," the former prime minister told a Sydney forum ahead of next month's G20 Leaders' Summit in London.

"The good effects we have already had is all we are going to have, and they have not been great effects anyway."

The Australian economy's 0.5per cent contraction in the December quarter has increased the controversy over the Rudd Government's $10.4billion budget stimulus package announced in October and a second, $42billion, package due to kick in this month.
