"Rather than being treated an export earner in trouble, universities were blamed for relying too much on the Chinese market. The idea of boosting Newstart and other welfare payments was dismissed out of hand.' - a situation the Libs orchestrated.

An excellent OP from the redoubtable Mr Quiggin. Clear analysis in the big picture context.

With the RBA calling for more fiscal stimulus for nigh on 2 years, apart from the cash splash, of which I can't help but consider cynically, this is the package they could/should have applied at least 12 months ago. Had they done so, only imo, the economy may have been in a better, stronger position to weather this storm.

yet as it is,. "the Economic aftershocks will..." indeed be felt for years to come. And possibly demonstrate to our present leadership that "hands off" fiscal management provides no benefit and only costs.

This virus, from reports of re-infection of people who have recovered in China, will be causing havoc for at least a year, and if the NSW and other estimates of infection rates, will deeply cut into productivity.

But I do have some sympathy for Morrison and Frydenberg, especially the latter as he is a moderate, that they will wear the consequences of today for a very long time - more so if they make mistakes. - but yes the unemployed people will grow if this bug takes a hold and the financial cost will be enormous. Yet if dame fortune smiles, they may come through as bloody heroes. What a gamble.

    Scott.
