When the big announcement(s) come out about NLNG and offtakes with the Japanese (and exactly how Hitachi fit above and beyond a mere contractor), 'Santos the passive investor' will of course be thrilled. Investors love value being added to their investments.

'Santos the acquisitor' will not be so happy. Could you imagine if there was a Santos person on ESG's board, how conflicted they would be? - forced to vote on a huge and company-making offtake agreement to a non-Santos party!

So, I guess we are going to find out soon enough why Santos are involved with ESG. ESG will force Santos' hand. Put up or shut up - let's see your cards.

And, can you imagine David Knox answering questions from large investors about Santos' investment in ESG:

"Why did you use Santos' (limited) funds to invest in a company that is competing against GLNG? Or Worse, "supplying one of GLNG's competitors in QLD?"

"And if the ESG investment was friendly, why did Santos not work co-operatively in the 'GBJV' with ESG, to reap the full commercial benefit of the deals ESG are now doing?"

"How could you let ANOTHER giant resource slip away?

What would Oscar Wilde say about Santos?:

"To lose one giant CSG resource may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose both looks like carelessness."
