Beware of even considering "common sense" and politics in same sentence.
Politicians will always blame the previous government and then pretend to satisfy their election promises and simply the public has a short memory and a news cycle of 24 hrs.
The current govenment will have a lot of trouble getting legislation through without possibly Australia industry damaging policy compromises.
We are in a world competition not a bubble so burning the oil gas industry does not mean it is ecconomic for a very fast transition as so much scale up is required and that requires investment. IMO govt will be so short of cash they won't eb able to make that investment etc. It is a tightrope with govt balancing different energy sources and their total carbon footprint and consideration of other countries ( massive emittersr) who will physically do little and simply increase their short term competitive advantage and then probably jump several technology steps.

I always use the example of India or especially Africa and phones where there was no network or very old copper and missing out apart from affluent city business regions they missed teh whole early mobilenetwork implemetationa d subsequent multiple lecacy installatiosn and moved straight from old copper to 3 and 4 g and subsequent benefits and no legacy cost. Transition was amazingly fast using technologya nd best of breed equipment tested by early implementer countries but now when ordered on the scale they needed ( and cheap labour) created the cheapest capital networks in world rolled out fastest and using generation of relaible technology . Straight from no service to fibre or sattelite nodes and 4g.

Africa nd a india same example with electricity with remote microgrids and solar adaption rather than huge distributed electricity infustructure of wires and poles.

So many countries by being late adopters may not get the fancy green hat and applause at a conference for being a 1st mover early adopter and instead will increase their GDP and profitability using old energy sources and then double up jumping technology and policy straight into a proven relaible newer energy source and doing it at scale at bagain prices once teh bugs are ironed out. World politics trying to implement a " carbon price" for all as iy has done will just create different trading blocks and segregation.

No simple answers as worldwide you are dealing with politicians who rarely fully follow pathway they start.
