The EU, desperately craving its "Energy Security" (& cheaper LNG) has never officially banned Russian LNG imports, following the invasion of Ukraine.
The EU has "aimed to quit [all- my word] Russian fossil fuels within a few years" .

It has been importing vast amounts of LNG from Qatar & the US, since the invasion
(N & W Europe, in particular, have severely cut back Russian gas imports- but several Eastern European countries still have major Russian gas imports).

With new EU legislation passed in December 2023, however, it is possible that steps will be taken to significantly reduce Russian LNG imports to the EU.

    euractiv. com Reuters 25.1.24 said.

"It is unclear if Belgium will use the option in an upcoming European Union law to block imports of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG), Belgium’s energy minister said on Monday (22 January).

A reform of EU gas market rules, agreed last year, is set to let EU countries stop deliveries of Russian pipeline gas and LNG by giving them a legal option to prevent Russian firms from booking capacity on their gas infrastructure.

Belgium’s energy minister Tinne Van der Straeten said it was “not entirely clear if we can work with that,” referring to the option in the EU gas market law.

“We are indeed also in Belgium confronted with specific contracts that were signed well before the war and it is now still an open point how to address this,” she told a meeting of the EU Parliament’s energy committee on Monday...

LNG imports from Russia rise, despite cuts in pipeline gas

European Union countries have increased their imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG

from Russia compared with before the Ukraine war, despite the EU’s aim to quit Russian fossil fuels within a few years, an analysis by campaigners showed.

Van der Straeten said any action to use the EU law’s option to restrict Russian LNG would first require consultations with neighbouring countries. “This is something that we cannot take on unilaterally,” she said.

The EU gas market rules are awaiting final approval from EU countries, a step that is usually a formality.

The 27-country EU pledged to ditch Russian gas after Moscow’s Feb. 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Europe’s pipeline imports of gas from Russia have plunged since the war began, but LNG imports have not.

Russian gas and LNG are not subject to EU sanctions. The EU does have a ban on seaborne crude oil and oil products imports from Russia.".
