Agree that the policy is both stupid and short sighted. However, your option for the wood fire, although great as far as atmosphere goes, wood is getting far harder to get and is more expensive than previously, although I suspect the the sales of wood heaters are still buoyant, rather than receding. Did you know that a large commercial jet aircraft can carry up to 150 tons of fuel ? Yep, we too, are happy and warm wood heater owners and also STO SH !
