At the open the ASX computer averages the overlapping bids/offers. Investors thinking BHP will rise place a high bid to be first in the queue. Similarly those thinking BHP will fall want to be first in the queue on the sell side. The open will probably be somewhere between the 2 unless a large order comes in at the open, which can slew the price. Note also that a lot of these otm orders are placed the preceding evening and may be pulled at the last minute prior to open.
For that reason it's impossible to calculate the opening price with any certainty based on what you see atm on market depth.
