I had a bit of a look at the performance of the top 20 stocks that WAM owned as per their announcement of NAV for the end of February.
Fair play to them for having a fairly large cash balance, but some of the stocks that were still in the top 20 as of the end of Feb are totally mystifying. How could they still own things like ALG, ALL and AFG? I know the speed of the market collapse has caught many a stock picker on the wrong foot, but, a supplier of mass leisure pursuits, machines to enclosed spaces and a facilitator of loans?
I dont want to sound like Harry hindsight, but it would have been hard to justify owning these stocks by the end of Feb in a rapidly developing sell off. Where are the filters? and how often are they applied? The answer cannot be, "Many" and "often" because they should have picked up CCP! (down ~75% from Feb 20th to today)
I am still invested in WAM, mainly because of the high cash levels and the possibility of some out performance during the recovery. NO LONGER because I believe Geoff Wilson and his team to be quality stock pickers.
