"Abbott imo has had significant influence on a now normalised, combative, unworkable form of federal politics, first as an aggressive, argumentative uncompromising Leader of the Opposition and then, in much the same mode, as Prime Minister of the Government. Policy progression stalled, in large part for his inability or unwillingness to negotiate. The trauma continued up to and beyond his dismissal by frustrated colleagues."
Indeed, Turnbull did put an end to the attack dog style of politics to a degree and lifted the quality of political debate but Shorten has ceased on the attack dog style that worked for Abbott in opposition and as it seems to be working for him he continues with it.
Turnbull is resisting lowering him self to those standard and is showing that he is open to negotiations in order to get things done rather than digging his heals in. I don't think voters full appreciate this and it may well be that Shorten's grandstanding is the distraction.
Time will tell and I think it's in every ones best interests that Turnbull's effort's become more appreciated, the last thing we need is Shorten as PM
