A 42-year-old man accused of threatening to poison Melbourne's water supply with cyanide has appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court.

Police allege Cezary Robert Konarzewski of Werribee emailed the national security hotline last week with threats to explode cannisters of cyanide into Melbourne's water catchments.

It is claimed he demanded an unspecified amount of money and that certain share prices rise on the stock market.

In the dock today the accused looked emotional, his head bowed as he wept.

He has been charged with a series of offences, including extortion and blackmail.

There was no application for bail and he was remanded in custody to reappear at the same court in April.
