A fire on the West Coast of the South Island has damaged the only rail link between Stockton coal mine and the coal export port of Lyttleton. The fire has damaged bridges ( including one bridge where 12 wooden piles will need to be replaced), track and signal systems.
Kiwi Rail says this will disrupt coal trains getting to the export facility for at least 6 weeks.
This will prevent the export of coal from Stockton mine for quite some time, causing major disruption to the existing customers of Stockton.
Will this have an effect on Bathurst when it completes the takeover of Stockton mine later this year?
