If theyre using nitrogen for a test its usually used as a cushion. Without a cushion the sudden pressure drop that often occurs when you open the downhole valve on a test string can cause problems. The cushion reduces the pressure differential. When testing on shore in open hole water is often used as a cushion and the main puropse is to stop the sudden increase in pressure across inflatable packers causing failure of same (and costing a trip out of the hole).
