stones river etc

I been googling a few of the terms mentioned in recent announcements and there's plenty of bakground on the web. For example, the 'Pencil Cave' is actually the Pencil Cave Formation, a distinctive shale bed that overlies the Stones River Fm across much of Kentucky (fragments were used as chalk to mark up drill pipe by the old-timers because of its bright green colour). The Stones River Group is a limestone which occurs up to 1000' thick in some locations (probably not at Riddle-13). It is usually oil-bearing and porous to a varying degree but flows can be dramatically increased when wells intersect fracture zones. Below is an extract from a piece from Champ Oil & Gas (small Kentucky producer):

'...Stones River Group & Murfreesboro Limestone - Underlying the Pencil Cave Formation is approximately 850 ft of micritic-limestone called the Stones River Group and Murfreesboro Limestone. Often these two formations blend together at their contact point and are difficult to differentiate. The Stones River and Murfreesboro sections produce oil and gas from fracture porosity in Champ's development area. Absolute open-flow rates have been gauged as high as 3,870 MCFD and initial oil production rates as high as 1500 BOPD. These are significant formations for future development and may eventually be greatly enhanced by horizontal drilling and proper stimulation techniques.'

There seem to be numerous examples of individual wells initially producing well over 1000bopd for weeks or months before settling down to produce at a hundred or so bopd for a longer period. Most shallow wells seem to settle at around 50bopd for many (5 to 30) years.

To date there has been minimal exploration of deeper geology but the consensus seems to be that bigger fields are expected to exist underneath these old leases yet to be drilled.
