That plays out differently for different people and is overlaid by culture and personality but the essence is still the same (apart from a very small number of deeply psychotic people) what we do is overlay our own stuff on to others. that can include inappropriate boundaries, suspicion or over trusting, taking advantage of others or trying to please. Whatever. It is pointless to try to understand those who are outside the bounds of normality or who seem so very different from ourselves - we can’t. We can never entirely get into their head and while appropriate empathy for damaged souls is fine that’s all we can do. So then you must simply fall back to being kind and respectful. which is sort of related to this thread. There’s a fine line between tolerance and decency and acceptance of others and acceptance of those who are not prepared to live by the values and standards of their adopted country. I think the problem is that our entry process really isn’t that good at screening people or identifying behaviour that would be deviant - and it’s not that hard for people to act as they should and change colours later. further once they are in our system doesn’t address decencies of problem behaviour at all well I don’t like the idea of breaking down the best of what we have for the worst of another country and the further apart on cultural continuum the greater the risk. Check out, if you aren’t familiar with it, the considerable work on cultural characteristics of different countries. I felt the same about the influx of Americans and the hunger for their lifestyle and management practices - urs screwed us up. And then I simply have to accept that this is the way civilisations have always gone

acceptance of others to be as they are and to never expect a similar regard is possibly my simplest explanation. i8 think you addressed that most eloquently. aberrant behaviours abound in everyone. we none of us escape the trials of our younger years unscathed, unscarred. weird is a word that have subtle differences and perhaps I used it too readily, too extreme a word for the context. though the hyperbolic can convey a point more succinctly, it can cause confusion. your fine line covers a wide gamut of difference. and deviance begins in small measures. yet the label "deviance" too is misleading damn these adjectives. ahhhehe
