When you attack a country and kill innocent people and take hostages, then you should expect a war. As a result your country gets bomb out. So happened to Nazi Germany and German citizens and their cities got bombed in a big way.
As a result Germany lost the war and Hitler and a few others killed themselves. Sparing the Germans total destruction.
