    depends on your risk profile, normal volatility of the stock, and its sp.

    for 2c stocks it's no use setting a stop loss of say 2% because small moves override it all the time.

    on the other hand a 2% s/l might be good for BHP.

    typically they are set around 5-10% depending on a number of factors. I'd think 10% was a max - it is for me usually.

    best thing to do is watch a few without putting your dough into them to get a feel for how they might work.

    ..... but like everything there's few hard and fast rules in the market..... you'll learn the hard way eventually.
