A friend from Sweden has been living in Australia for the last year. He told me that before coming to OZ he had the perception this is the country of the happy, fair, and honest aussie larrikin.
The last frontier where millions of people came to escape corrupt governments that turned prosperous countries into basket cases and tyranny.
Instead he is surprised to see the depth of corruption underlining the Australian society and the tendency to be indifferent to it. It seems we are happy to embrace a convict legacy as part of our principles of fair go, self advancement, and democracy. This imp easement to wrongdoing is mostly promoted and sanctioned by politicians.
He noted his amazement to the increase of corrupt behaviour and looting of public money by Australians. Rorting of
    - School Halls schemes (revolution in looting)
    - Border security and people detention projects
    - Dental scheme
    - Indigenous housing project
    - Roof insulation

    In addition to:
    - Australian companies bribing. AWB Securancy ( RBA) RIOetc

    - Collapse of many financial schemes and fund management due to corrupt conduct .
    - The entire cheating and dodgy ness going on in sport, and state and local governments.
No prosecutions or jailing of culprits!!...
If this happened in China, USA, or Europe many people would be locked up especially those crooked bureaucrats..
I had to press the Swede about this convict culture thing!.
He didnt mean it as an insult. In contrast he expressed his fondness and admiration of Australians. He said look, the Americans have a gun culture dating back to the Indian and cowboy days for them its Ok to bear arms We in Sweden find it wacky. Australia has a colonial history where convicts had to con their way to freedom and prosperity.
Today it seems a con job is still part of achieving success in certain areas particularly in politics and public works.
As Australians, we may be guilty sometimes of being too tolerant, indifferent, complacent, and aloof. We may look SMUG but we are not MUGs.
