The answer seems simple to me, at least having the luxury from where I sit. What is needed is a reduction in consumption AND production. The trend in gyms etc can only be a band-aid fix.
For example, we have TV channels airing shows that champion the cooks, who make the highly appealing food, and then, at the same time, airing shows that deplore the people who have taken the bait, placing the blame squarely on their shoulders for their weight issue. However, they are both contributing to the same vicious circle and are both equally to blame. When we make our food to be extremely palatable, we can and will eat more of it. It is not rocket science.
That said, however, the obesity problem will probably persist. Capitalism/democracy needs increased consumption and production to work. I do not mean to sound like some left-wing nutter. Rather, just commenting on a reality.
