If it hadn't been for WMC looking for freshwater back in 1992 they would have nothing. Most of the conclusions come from a single WMC bore.
Trench testing also appears to have provided the same bang for buck.

These guys have done in just over 18 months what most companies have done in 4-5 years. In some cases done much more (at least at superficial level). This is why a few posters raise their eyebrows.
