mardo, good observation. RED's sp jumped more than others, but high daily volume and massive trade(s) around 4:40pm and 4:49pm occurred at a few junior goldies.
MML had a huge (1 million+) trade at 16:40. NST had three trades totalling 3 mill around that time. BDR and KCN also had high volume with one or two big trades at 16:40. But nothing special over at the big end of town (NCM).
My guess is that either a technical trigger relating to gold price or the gold mining index prompted these buys. Volumes were high during the day (technically relevant) and prices languished or were trending down until about 3pm, then soared. Alternatively, could be short covering, but I'm not sure RED or some others had THAT much shorting.
