a thought on this is that the fund rebalance involves the movement of share ownership, and therefore the short interest ownership as well. The high figure yesterday may be a reflection of the transfer of ownership of the short contracts ... we only see gross shorts on a daily basis.
You may find that there is an equivalent number of closures showing up in 3 days time on the net figures.
