Barnacles, I think you're drawing a long bow with some of your conjectures but i guess the forum is here for all of us to post our thoughts, whatever they might be. Who knows what will happen with this virus however the Funeral Industry dealt with the aids epidemic years ago without much drama. Everyone was scared but Funerals went ahead as usual and plenty of mourners attended the Funeral services. Clearly a different way of catching it - we know now but at the time everyone was panicking.
If a non attended cremation is chosen, then a coffin is still required. It will be a basic one but Invocare will still make plenty of money from it. The only time a coffin is not used is a burial at sea and that rarely happens.
Meltonite, I didn't know about the consumer watchdog announcement. I'm surprised as I would have thought the issues were already well known. You would think that Invocare would have to declare their intention to buy another brand and be given permission to proceed with it so the level of ownership is hardly a secret. It must be more about how they use the lack of competition to their advantage. They certainly do that but again its hardly a secret that they have huge mark ups on their coffins and urns etc. Barnacles made a quip about it so he knows. I will be very interested to see how it plays out and look forward to reading more posts on the matter.

My long bow was fairly obvious, wasn't it?
