If it was only 10 wells then I believe your plan could be a goer. Of course there would be a few hardliners who would not accept any wells but if it was only 10 wells then there would probably not be the mass blockading. When Peter Henderson mentioned the 1000 wells and then you see the aerial pics of what 1000 wells looks like it would be enough for pretty much anybody living nearby to arc up.
Your compromise has a lot of merit and it does look like a win win for everyone. The biggest obstacle I can see is shareholder revolt in not being allowed to "turn the place into swiss cheese".

Lets not kid ourselves that Hot Copper is some stronghold of compassionate ecologically concerned do gooders. One quick read of the Politics threads shows that rednecks are very well represented here. I think that most people who are passionate about the environment have better things to do than come online and pretend to be rednecks.
