Zamia Gold Mines Ltd has made an impressive share market debut as the mining junior seeks to tap into an historically gold-rich swathe of central Queensland.
The company's shares hit the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) screens at 30 cents at 1100 AEDT Wednesday, up 10 cents or 50 per cent on its issue price of 20 cents.
The stock hit a high of 40 cents during the day, before closing up 18 cents, or 90 per cent, at 38 cents.
Zamia executive chairman Peter Bradfield said the market had responded favourably to renewed interest in the Clermont region in central Queensland.
"The whole area has a strong gold mining credibility and history - gold mining has taken place since the 1880s - and I think people are excited about the resurgence of interest in that area," Mr Bradfield said.
"As a small junior emerging gold producer, I think Zamia has a particularly exciting story to tell."
Last year, Zamia raised $4 million through an oversubscribed initial public offering (IPO) of 20 million shares.
It will use the funds to undertake a major exploration and development program in Clermont region.
Ground held by Zamia includes an option over the Belyando open pit gold mine, which produced 85,846 ounces of gold between 1988 and 1993.
"Zamia Gold Mines has exciting prospects, with a mix of new areas and other ground which is anything but virgin," Mr Bradfield said.
"We've exploration permits over 2,750 square kilometres in the Clermont region, and we're aiming to reopen and expand the Belyando open pit and the Lucky Break mine within two years."
Zamia said the Clermont region produced 400,000 ounces of gold between 1878 and 1965, with intense exploration since 1980 leading to the discovery of 20 new sites.
