Massive iron ore deposit found

A West Australian explorer has announced it has discovered what could be the Mid West's single biggest iron ore deposit.

Cashmere Iron yesterday reported results of exploration studies from its project south east of Sandstone, confirming a combined haematite and magnetite deposit in excess of one billion tonnes.

The company chairman, David Hendrie, says the haematite and magnetite ore is contained in a 7.5 kilometre stretch of banded iron ridges.

He believes further studies could reveal a resource which rivals that of Gindalbie's Karara project or Crosslands' Jack Hills deposit.

"This has the potential to be the largest single deposit within the Mid West," he said.

Mr Hendrie believes further studies could prove the resource is up to eight billion tonnes, representing a potential mine life in excess of 50 years.

He says the company has already had discussions with the proponents of the Oakajee Port and Rail project.

"To get up to full capacity you're looking at about a four to five year timeline, so we're realistically hoping that all fits in with the completion of Oakajee and the infrastructure railway lines."
