The cost of a TV or a washing machine or a fridge is extremely minor compared to the cost of a house. Yes things were more expensive, particularly travel and consumer goods but the 'poor bugger me' attitude of those that bought houses at 3 times their wage, usually without the wife having to work, is tiresome and irksome.
There is no doubt it is harder for young people today to buy a house. Rents are way high which makes saving a deposit difficult, HECS leaves you with a $40k + debt and you need to save $20% to forgo mortgage insurance.
Not to mention wages have stagnated for 20 years. I work for myself but job offers for my line of work are paying what I was getting in 2001 when I came back to Australia from an expat stint.
It's a nightmare treadmill that my kids are about to embark upon. It sucks.
