Worth keeping in mind a few key items here
- lawyers are involved (by necessity) which may have influenced the wording significantly for two reasons
i) potential future action
ii) lawyers being lawyers
- influencing the negotiated outcome (maybe Lake has the upper hand here). I suspect they believe their view on the date is technically correct and use the word with the intent they may force the issue. I suspect the key date is triggered as a period from a key date which is the point of contention, or a clause that allows it to be extended under certain circumstances eg delays outside control of Lilac which becomes more subjective.
