Indeed, Vanguard was the non-profit company started by John Bogle, who created low-cost index funds in America way back (and has since written numerous good books about them).
Not entirely sure what the reasoning is behind using the ASX300 as opposed to the ASX200, considering the benefit from the additional diversification would be minute.
I don't hold any VAS but have some STW and some of Vanguard's unlisted ASX300 fund.
