Borrowing stock is like a margin loan contract. You will need to post a decent collateral. If the market moves against your short position, the lender has the right to ask for more collateral, or request immediate return of the borrowed stock. I would say with some confidence the lenders rarely lose out even if the borrower gets creamed.
