Yeh its a debarcle thats for sure . 17926132

Hard to fathom that we are going create maybe 3000 jobs or so for the money spent and yet we let a car industry go that is going cost maybe 200000 jobs ?

This sort of manufacturing industry lost to the country is a sinew of our ability to turn manufacturing into war time production .

Ie a ready workforce of people already in an industrial environment.

In an industrial sense and i dont know how many of these subs will be under construction at one time i cant help but feel there will be lots of office space provided for thses jobs fighting over who is going make the beds and mattresses for the subs? Maybe supply the kitchen few toilets and shower curtains etc

Yes some steel is going be used but gee cars use alot of this also and well we may have a few seat manufactures tend for the captains chair and some kitchen chairs or something ?

Ive been for one little look on a submarine before and im trying fathom what we are going do other than build the hull with someone elses design under instruction.

Perhaps a lot of these job numbers are inclusive of the foreign content including the weapons systems from other countries .

Its a hull and yes it may seem like im not with the defense strategy part . But are the hulls of our old ones non refurbishable?

At the end of this will we be able build a new submarine on our own?

Even the boots the sailors are most likely wont be procured in Australia .

We know how effective a ute filled with a machine gun and a few willing fighters are as we are fighting a war now with all the high tech stuff against it . To lose that ability not to mention the workforce does not seem add up .

But in 2010  estimated costs 36 billion to build yet we put it off anyway . 7145397

THE Australian Submarine Corporation has "no god-given right" to design or build future submarines.
ASC builds the beleaguered Collins-class submarines, and chief executive Steve Ludlam says it has to prove itself worth y of new contracts.

Mr Ludlam defended the Collins submarines as "world-class" in a speech in Adelaide on Friday, but said ASC had to be competitive to get a slice of the navy contract to design 12 new vessels, estimated to cost about $36 billion.

"We have to recognise that people from offshore will be interested in providing (the submarines) and we have to beat them," he told an Australia-Israel Chamber of Commerce lunch. "We've got no god-given right -- we've got to prove ourselves in a competitive environment."

The federal government has announced the new submarines will be built at the Techport common-user facility in Adelaide, home of ASC, regardless of who wins the tender.
The race is now on to secure the design contract, with the Defence Department confirming last month it was investigating off-the-shelf designs from four overseas companies.

"We will not earn the right to design and build a future submarine or frigate until we prove ourselves and perform in an exemplary manner," Mr Ludlam said.

"We've got to get our Collins submarines right before we are ready to take on this multi-billion-dollar project.

"If we don't achieve production and maintenance efficiencies from AWD (air warfare destroyer) and Collins respectively, then nobody is going to believe we deserve to undertake another project." South Australian Premier Mike Rann has been among those lobbying to win the design centre, expected to create between 400 and 600 jobs.

Mr Ludlam, who joined ASC in November, rejected descriptions of Collins-class submarines as "failing" and "troubled". "This is a view in Australia, but it's not a view held around the world
Its a little winner off track but to be included in budgets 36 billion dollars!!!!!!!!!!!!http://www.theaustralian.com.au/nat...s-submarine-boss/story-e6frg8yo-1225887772347
