60 yrs ago those now on NDIS were locked up in institutional care with no respect for their intelligence - because we couldn't understand them. in the '70s the book written by a young woman named Annie revolutionised our understanding of these people (Annies Coming Out - https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2242209.Annie_s_Coming_Out).
de-insitutionalisation and the NDIS has allowed many people with disabilities to thrive and receive help to learn to communicate, to have tools for independence provided (not cheap or free) and many are now productive members of the community at large.
