Sometimes the TO is for ALL shares on the market and the company is absorbed into the TO vehicle. The holder of the original company receives a "cheque in the mail" so to speak. In other cases they are given shares in the new owners company. For example, many years ago I held Crown Casino shares when they were taken over by PBL. In this case, the shares which I purchased at $0.35 were given to us at a conversion rate that valued them at around $0.59. I may be a little off on that figure but it was close to double. As a result, I became the holder of PBL (Packer) shares.
