Kacy Obama received huge support amongst people earning 100 k and over and the Republican intelligentsia - they've been abandoning the Bush admin with it's big spending policies for years - Palin was the last straw. The Democrats are the last people to leave budget surplus. Bush has been a fiscal disaster. If you count the military establishment, the financial sector and the car industry the US is practically a socialist country.
