Earlier today I posted an interesting article which got lost in the private health issues, but it is on the same lines as your post so have reposted it below.
It seems that we can give one year's notice to withdraw from the convention. Surely then we can form our own policies on who and how people can enter this country. We could still have a policy for genuine people in need.
One interesting excerpt from the article and surely this issue does need to be addressed. It seems that we HAVE to give unlimited legal aid to asylum seekers under the convention:"To prevent asylum seekers appealing directly to the courts after this time, a referendum might need to be organised to amend the Constitution, limiting access to the High Court to Australian citizens and permanent residents only."
