thanks - i was wondering exactly what happened.

should the annular ring be 3/4 inch wide and not 1 1/2 inches ie only 1/2 the difference in diameters.

a couple of further questions:

1 would the cement slurry come up 1000 ft before it was noticed ?

2 would the slurry be only a day or so old and therefore relatively low strength.

3 would another factor be that the cement slurry cannot be hydrated since there is no free water present, thus curing is further inhibited and strength reduced.

as others have indicated the mind boggles at what is actually happening below ground.

I would not lose any sleep over this episode. Its happened before and the solution is tried and tested - we hope.
