Not so sure that Methane is increasing in the stratosphere mjp. There is inferred data and observations that it may well be the case it is actually decreasing. NOAA have indirectly acknowledged this and we have covered this via the Solomon paper on decreasing water vapour in the stratosphere
Water vapour in the stratosphere comes from two sources. Rising water vapour making it past the tropopause and from the oxidation of Methane in the stratosphere. You take your pick as to which one is the cause of the decrease in water vapour or perhaps it is both. It does not matter as both go against the settled science anyway

The findings might help explain why global surface temperatures have not risen as fast in the last ten years as they did in the 1980s and 1990s............

No you don't do you! Just as NOAA has stated back in 2010. Nothing has changed other than the continuing adjustments to observed data.
So what do we have now? The settled science would have us believe that temperatures are still increasing at an alarming rate.
But the very fundamentals of settled climate science does not match reality.
So where has the settled science gone wrong.
2 options
The GHE and modelling is JUST plain wrong or,
Temperature data is being adjusted to keep the game alive. But in doping so they are now discarding one of the fundamentals behind the GHE.
the settled science is NOT so settled is it.
